Before pet food was commercialized, people fed them with leftovers from game or table scraps. The first commercial pet food was “dog cake”, produced in 1860 by James Spratt in a first coherent effort to improve the overall quality of what was given to dogs. The granulated feed that we know appeared in 1957. Today, the pet food industry is in full growth with sales increasing annually thanks to new products and the new needs of this segment.
